Extra Mural Studies
The Zoological Society of London offers Extra Mural Studies (EMS) placements for veterinary undergraduates each summer.
Applications for summer 2013 will be accepted from January 2012. Summer 2012 placements are fully booked.

Each EMS placement will be based on a three-week module. There will be a total of four successive placements at both London Zoo and Whipsnade Zoo, giving a total of eight placements for the summer.
The placements offer a unique opportunity for a veterinary undergraduate to “see practice” with colleagues working full time in the field of zoo and wild animal medicine and pathology. In addition, during clinically quiet periods, the student will be expected to produce a short, written case report and to write up a project to present as an informal Powerpoint presentation during the last week of their placement. Please note that we are unable to offer any accommodation at London or Whipsnade for the duration of your placement.
To be eligible a student must be about to start their final year at a veterinary school by the time the placement starts and be committed to a complete three week period. The three-week periods commence on the following dates: 24 June, 15 July, 5 August and 27 August.
Applications should be made using the application form provided. Details of two referees must be provided, and the preferred site and available dates for the placement must be specified. Applications for both ZSL London Zoo and Whipsnade Zoo should be emailed to ems@zsl.org or posted to Anne Nilsson, Veterinary Department, Zoological Society of London, Regents Park, London, NW1 4RY by 13 April 2012. Successful applicants will be informed of their placement and the dates by 18 May 2012.

Please note other than the dates stated above we are unable to offer placements at any other time of the year due to our commitment to teaching the MSc in Wild Animal Heath, taught in collaboration with the Royal Veterinary College (link to IoZ page). Placements are available only to students in the summer before their final year, and we do NOT run pre-clinical EMS placements.
Placements for Summer 2012 are fully booked.
