Ilona Furrokh Head Veterinary Nurse

All set for a career in zoological research, Ilona realised she enjoyed the more hands on field work and found a job with the RSPCA where they took lots of wildlife and exotics.

Ilona FurrokhFollowing her vet nurse training, she worked in general practice before gaining extensive experience at ZSL Whipsnade Zoo.

Swapping Whipsnade for managing an animal sanctuary in Somerset, Ilona found she missed the challenge of working in a zoo. She re-joined the team at ZSL London Zoo in 2000, and was promoted to head nurse in 2002.

Aspiring vet nurses should be 'single-minded about which practices they apply to,' says Ilona. 'It’s very important to get as much exotic and large animal work as possible.'
