Edmund Flach - ZSL Veterinary Pathologist
Starting out in general practice, Edmund studied for an MSc in Tropical Veterinary Medicine, which took him to Tanzania and Morocco before joining the veterinary team at ZSL in 1992.
© ZSLEdmund was the vet for ZSL Whipsnade Zoo for 14 years, before becoming ZSL's Zoo and Wildlife Pathologist in 2006.
Edmund says the birth of elephant calves at Whipsnade in the spring and autumn of 2004 was a real highlight of his time as clinical vet, but he also loved the opportunity to be involved in field conservation both in the UK and abroad. Edmund carried out the veterinary work for ZSL’s successful effort to re-establish populations of corncrakes to the English countryside, and has also been to Tunisia on several occasions to assist the Scimitar horned oryx reintroduction programme.
As pathologist, Edmund investigates the cause of death of animals in the collections, and also tries to discover underlying problems which predispose to illness and death. "In this way I see my role as supporting the clinical vets and keepers to ensure the best health and welfare for all our animals; from snails to elephants, and everything in between!".
