Canada
In 2007, the Canadian Living Planet Report was published, which included a national index and disaggregation of the data set relevant for Canada. The report was used as a tool to communicate trends in biodiversity and the Ecological Footprint of Canada, and gave recommendations to both policy makers and the general public on actions for the future.
To create the Canadian LPI, we looked at 1,057 population trends from 393 vertebrate species that live there. Between 1970 and 1989, these populations increased slowly, thanks in part to effective conservation, and then held relatively steady until 1994. But between 1995 and 2003 they decreased sharply – by almost 25 percent. This is a sign that threats like habitat loss and invasive species are stopping some species from recovering and causing others to decline.
