I am currently developing and continuously working on molecular techniques for screening a range of pathogens of interest for the Garden Wildlife Health (GWH) and for all Disease Risk Analysis and Health Surveillance for Interventions (DRAHS) projects authorised by Natural England. These diseases include: Trichomonas sp., Entamoeba invadens, Hymenolepis spp. and Rodentolepis spp., Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis, ranavirus, avipoxivirus, Suttonella sp., Chlamydia sp.
I help with technical support for molecular diagnostic studies of various amphibian species, looking for the chytrid fungus (Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis) and Ranavirus using Real-time PCR.
All reintroduction projects include a detailed veterinary management protocol. These protocols consist of screening, clinical & post-mortem examination of indigenous British species some of which are of conservation concern. As part of the health surveillance we do for interventions some species such as the common dormouse spend a quarantine period with us before being released in the wild. The species we work with include the red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris), corncrake (Crex crex), red kite (Milvus milvus) common dormouse (Muscardinus avellanarius), red-barbed ant (Formica rufibarbis), sand lizard (Lacerta agilis), cirl bunting (Emberiza cirlus), fenraft spider (Dolomedes plantarius), short-haired bumblebee (Bombus subterraneus)
