What you can do
The impact made by climate change will depend upon how successful we are at keeping the temperature increase as low as possible.
International efforts to curb greenhouse gas emissions, such as the Kyoto protocol, have clearly failed to ensure that we’ll be able to stay within critical threshold temperature levels.
However, as individuals we can all do our bit to reduce emissions to such a degree that our combined actions could have the biggest reducing impact of all.
For example, in Europe the energy we use in our homes produces more climate changing greenhouse gases than the whole of the region’s manufacturing industry.
The UK domestic sector is responsible for 30% of the UK’s total energy consumption and about 25% (almost 40 million tonnes) of carbon gas emissions. The average annual UK household carbon footprint is 9.85 tonnes.
