Conservation with shifting goalposts: polar conservation and climate change; a ZSL Science and Conservation Event.

King Penguin - Mountain
Some of the most wide-ranging threats to biodiversity stem from the biological impacts of climate change, which can impact the habitat and food of all species, from penguins and polar bears to corals.

While we can identify the problem, the biological effects of climate change are beyond the control of conservationists.

Should we acknowledge this and do what we can, or are we papering over the cracks? Is it possible to mitigate the effects of climate change and, if so, how?

Three zoologists will describe what climate change means for their Antarctic species or ecosystem, and evaluate the possibility of implementing conservation strategies that are robust against climate change.

Talks and speakers:
Flying seabirds and the Southern Ocean ecosystem
Claire Tancell – University of Cambridge

Antarctic seals - predicting responses to climate change
Dr Iain Staniland – British Antarctic Survey

Problems with penguins and climate change
Dr Tom Hart – Institute of Zoology, ZSL

Organised by Tom Hart and Alex Rogers, Institute of Zoology, ZSL.

This event in the 'Communicating Science' series will begin at 6.00pm (doors from 5.00pm) and talks are scheduled to finish at 7.30pm; admission is free and open to everyone (no advance booking or registration required). This event will be held in the ZSL Meeting Rooms and seats will be on a first-come, first-served basis.

A dinner with the speakers will follow this event and places must be booked in advance. A dinner booking form is available above; please download for further information.

ZSL Science and Conservation Events: An essential part of ZSL's work is to communicate relevant, high-quality zoological and conservation science. The integrated ZSL Science and Conservation Events programme includes Symposia, and the new 'Wildlife Conservation' and 'Communicating Science' series. Topics cover a wide variety of zoological and conservation themes, and international experts present and discuss their research
