Communicating Science: Conservation biology of the European eel

Conservation biology of the European eel - a ZSL Science and Conservation event.

In the past 10–20 years there has been growing concern in relation to the decline in recruitment 'outside safe biological limits' of the European eel across Europe. The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species describes the species as Critically Endangered.

The proposed causal factors include: changes in oceanic currents and/or climatic conditions, barriers to migration, loss of freshwater habitat, pollution, poor condition of migrating silver eels, overfishing and pathogens. While the weight of evidence for some factors is greater than others, it is unlikely that there will be a sole cause.

The dire situation of the European eel will be discussed, as well as the efforts that are being made to study the little-understood biology and ecology of the species.

This event in the 'Communicating Science' series will begin at 6.00pm (doors from 5.00pm) and talks are scheduled to finish at 7.30pm; admission is free and open to everyone (no advance booking or registration required). This event will be held in the ZSL Meeting Rooms and seats will be on a first-come, first-served basis.
