African Bird Safari

The new African Bird Safari at London Zoo is a real treat for any bird enthusiast.

Blue bellied rollerPresented as a walk-through visitor experience, it is a great way to get up close and personal with some of our animals and at 51m long and 10m high the aviary offers a huge flying space for the birds.

The environment provides a naturalistic habitat for the birds, whilst also recreating a strong visual element for visitors who can wander right through the centre of the enclosure as rare breeds fly above their heads.

A fine mist adds to the experience as you stroll over the bridge in amongst carefully selected, mature foliage.

You can currently see the Abdim’s stork colony, African ducks, inquisitive Von der Decken’s hornbills and two species of rollers.

Opened Easter 2005, the African Bird Safari was a redevelopment of the Stork and Ostrich House and replaced three small and outdated bird enclosures.
