Quirky slender loris baby born at ZSL London Zoo

Wednesday 7 October 2009

With its huge Bambi-like eyes and long slender limbs ZSL London Zoo’s newest addition could be straight out of a Disney movie – but it is in fact a grey slender loris.

Samaya, whose sex is yet unknown, is first baby slender loris to be born at the Zoo for 13 years.

The cute, playful youngster will be given the pet name of Sam if male or Maya if female.

ZSL's EDGE of Existence conservation programme supports conservation of slender lorises in Sri Lanka, where populations are thought to be under threat from deforestation.

It’s hoped Samaya’s birth will allow both keepers and conservationists to learn more about the species.

Visitors can now come and see the three-month-old youngster playing with its mother, Menika, and father, Nehru, in the Zoo’s Night Zone.
