ZSL have joined forces with Petplan to offer insurance products for pet owners who want protection from the cost of vets’ fees. Plus, for every annual policy taken out, Petplan is donating 10% of the premium cost to ZSL to help support ongoing conservation work.

There are dozens of reasons why the British love keeping pets. But pet ownership brings responsibilities too. Your pet depends on you entirely and it is up to you to make sure it is happy, healthy and well-nourished. In financial terms, the cost can be high. What happens if your pet becomes ill or gets injured?

In Britain, we are used to having free medical treatment for humans - we take it for granted. Through the National Health Service we can always turn to our GP, and there are nurses and specialists around if we need them. These health professionals are highly qualified – they’ve spent years in training and perhaps decades specialising in a particular field. Their time is valuable, but most of us are not even aware of the real cost of the treatment and medicines we receive.

Perhaps it is because of this culture that vets’ bills take us by surprise. When we take our animals to the surgery, it can come as a real shock to find out just how much medical treatment actually costs. This is where pet insurance comes in. By paying a regular premium, pet owners can relax in the knowledge that should their pet need expensive veterinary treatment, which could run into thousands of pounds, they can get help with the cost. As with any insurance policy, terms and conditions apply.
