At the first Zoo Lates of the summer this Friday, the animals at ZSL London Zoo will be staying up later than usual – and keepers have come up with imaginative treats to ensure they’re bright-eyed and bushy-tailed for the big event.
From decorating monkey enclosures with rainbow bunting to preparing giant kebab skewers for the giant tortoises, the keepers have been busy making special arrangements for the late night opening.
Communications Director Rich Storton said: “It’s not just the people that will be having a great time at Zoo Lates this Friday night; the animals will definitely be joining in with the fun.
The keepers are always developing new forms of enrichment to help keep the animals happy and healthy – so whilst the visitors are dancing in the silent disco, or enjoying a burger from the BBQ on Friday night, the animals will be entertained with their own special night-time treats.”

Adding some flair to the squirrel monkey’s treetop canopy, their climbing ropes were decorated with brightly coloured bunting.

The mischievous meerkats compared treats in their silkworm-stuffed party puzzle feeders.

Sampling the delights of Zoo Lates’ street food festival the trio of giants munched on some special metre-long giant kebabs made with whole peppers

Keepers entertained nine-month-old cubs Heidi and Indi with a pair of neon boomer balls to play with.

Lining their four stomachs with some high energy treats, the Zoo’s leggy ladies enjoyed ice lollies packed with sweet strawberries and carrots.
