Conservation breeding programmes

Where possible, ZSL makes that crucial link between zoo-based conservation programmes and in-range programmes.

Vulture conservation
ZSL has considerable experience in the development and management of single species ex situ conservation breeding and reintroduction programmes. We can provide advice and assistance based on our experience of working both in and out of range countries.

Recent successful ZSL conservation breeding and reintroduction programmes include:

New initiatives can be based in an established zoo or aquarium, as an integral part of a new zoo or aquarium development of as a stand-alone intensive conservation breeding and reintroduction programme.

Through our work with the EAZA Taxon Advisory groups (TAGs) and ZSL’s involvement in many European Endangered Species Programmes (EEPs) we are able to share our experience in this crucial conservation work with anyone looking to develop similar programmes.

The Convention on Biological Diversity and the World Zoo and Aquarium Conservation Strategy recognise and encourage the role of zoos in range countries in wildlife conservation and ZSL would like to work with more partners in this key area.
