Anti-poaching patrols
Hunting is illegal, covert, difficult to detect and devastating to tiger populations.
Combating poaching is a key part of tiger conservation in Indonesia and ZSL has launched an anti-poaching unit.
Based in Berbak National Park’s Jambi Province, the unit is in effect made up of foot soldiers that are up against organised gangs of poachers, who primarily use inexpensive and simple-to-make wire cable leg-hold snares to kill tigers.
The team protect tigers by carrying out regular tiger habitat patrols and monitoring trails to deter and detect poaching, as well as following up with investigations, arrests and prosecution.
Another role of the unit is to conduct community education and outreach programmes to minimise conflict between humans and tigers and to make local people aware of the importance of conserving this critically endangered species.
