Okapi conservation donations

A glimpse of the mysterious okapi © ZSL

ZSL is currently working in the northern sector of the Virunga National Park, DRC in the Watalinga forest. Camera traps set up by ZSL and the Congolese Institute for Nature Conservation (ICCN) have recently confirmed that okapi still survive in this area in spite of decades of civil conflict. The okapi is a flagship species for conservation in the DRC and so this discovery is of national, and international, importance.

Funds are urgently required to fully research the status of this newly discovered okapi population and ensure its survival. Preliminary work suggests that okapi in the Virunga National Park are incredibly endangered. The capacity of the ICCN needs to be enhanced immediately, so that poaching in the Virunga National Park can be better controlled, or this okapi population will become extinct.
