Alison is a qualified Zoo Keeper and worked with primates and birds on the Mammals South and Birds sections at London Zoo before secondment to the Veterinary Department in September 2013 in the new position of Welfare Officer. She is now responsible for the daily care of the inpatients, ensuring general husbandry, correct diets, medication and enrichment. The latter is especially important for animals that are undergoing an extended stay due to ill-health or quarantine.
As Welfare Officer, Alison is also responsible for integrating welfare in all that we do. She helps drive the welfare audit process that operates across both ZSL London and Whipsnade Zoos; by liaising with sections and curators on planned improvements, by undertaking welfare training and passing on this knowledge and experience in a practical way, and by reporting back regularly to the Animal Welfare Committee on progress.
