Research

Rapid destruction of the world’s biodiversity has led to one of the greatest challenges to scientists and societies - balancing the requirements of an expanding human population with the need to effectively conserve the systems that provide the services on which our societies depend. The focus of my research concerns several related areas of understanding extinction risk among species, developing biodiversity indicators to accurately gauge biodiversity depletion and establishing the scientific evidence base for sound environmental decision making (see full list of publications, and the Indicators & Assessments Unit website).

Biodiversity indicators

Accurately measuring global decline in biodiversity is essential to effectively address its depletion. Several metrics are required to capture the complex nature of biodiversity. Arguably one of the most intuitive measures is of change in species status. This relatively coarse measure of change is augmented by measures of change in abundance. I have 2 relevant projects:

- Living Planet Index
- Red List Index

In both, I am interested in new developments and applications, including the improvement of methodological techniques, expanding and improving data and developing the predictive capability of biodiversity indicators.

Baseline biodiversity assessment

The conservation status of less than 3% of the world’s described biodiversity is currently known. Clearly this limits understanding of the impact of humans on biodiversity, and with it the ability to make informed decisions on conservation planning and action. One of the major challenges for the IUCN Red List is assessing the larger groups that represent the majority of the world’s biodiversity. With these larger groups of less well-known organisms, a comprehensive survey of extinction risk for the whole group is not feasible.

To illustrate the problem, consider the estimated 287,655 plant species of which roughly 85% have been described but of those around 4% have had their conservation status assessed. Producing conservation assessments for the remaining 96% within a reasonable timeframe is not possible. However, the need for a broader view of the status of biodiversity is urgent.

It has become increasingly clear that taxa differ in the relative level of threat they face, with certain groups at higher risk of extinction than others. Determining the reasons for these differences is one of the key actions needed for proactive conservation. As a first step, increased coverage of baseline data is required for The IUCN Red List. A truly global picture of biodiversity requires coverage of all major taxonomic groups. We can no longer afford to base conservation decisions on a restricted and non-representative subset of species.

Scaling & prediction of extinction risk

Global species extinction typically represents the end point in a long sequence of population declines and local extinctions. While comparative studies of extinction risk in contemporary species have found universal traits that may predispose taxa to an elevated risk of extinction, and local population level studies have given us insight into the process of population decline and extinction, there is still little appreciation of how local processes scale up to global patterns. In this part of my research I am interested in evaluating the extent to which population decline relates to species extinction, and quantifying variability in risk to different anthropogenic drivers across species and communities.

Monitoring & prioritisation

The resources available for conservation are insufficient to prevent the loss of much of the world’s threatened biodiversity during this crisis. Conservation planners have been forced to prioritise their protective activities, in the context of great uncertainty – this has become known as ‘the agony of choice’. Firstly I am interested in how to best prioritise conservation. Conservation priority setting based on phylogenetic diversity has frequently been proposed but rarely implemented. Our EDGE project makes an attempt to do this.

Monitoring wildlife presents a number of challenges and the ability to survey and track change in abundance of species is of increasing importance. I have a project in Liberia which is developing camera trap monitoring techniques, particularly targeted at the Pygmy hippo. I've also been collaborating on a monitoring project in Antarctica, developing indices of penguin population and phenological change, with Tom Hart .
