Soapbox Science

At the Southbank
Some of the UK’s best scientific brains took science to the streets at South Bank on July 16th 2012 for Soapbox Science, a one day event organised by the Zoological Society of London.
ZSL and L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science programme joined forces with the help of some of the UK’s most prominent female scientists, to bring science to the people.
Bringing science to you

From explaining the merits of experiments in space, to how plants make decisions, the Soapbox Science event to showcased UK women in science to inspire the next generation of scientists by making science fun and accessible.
The talks
From volcanoes to car paint, here are just a few of the subjects our scientists brought to the streets:
Have you ever wondered why some ‘stuff’ is gooey and other ‘stuff’ is rough or hard?
What makes females and males so different? It’s all in the genes!
What do helpful humans and friendly fish have in common?
Ever wondered how plants ‘know’ when to flower?
Did you realize how clever diseases are? Can we ever beat them?
See our gallery of speakers from 2011 .
Science fact, not fiction

Bewildered by black holes?
Puzzled by photons?
At a loss over ash clouds?
