Shallow Seas

The shallow fringe of sea (less than 10 m deep) that laps the world’s coastlines contains the most diverse marine ecosystems, and provides numerous resources and ecosystem services. These waters are among the most sensitive systems to human and natural perturbation, including urbanisation, pollution, sea filling and fishing, as well as projected changes in sea level, storm intensity and oceanic acidity.

Yet despite the clamours of concern for many marine conservation problems, the threats to the fragile ecosystems in coastal shallows are grossly underappreciated.

This meeting will address the problems, and describe best practice and progress in resolving both biophysical and socio-economic issues.
