About the Institute of Zoology
The Institute of Zoology (IoZ) is a world-renowned research centre working at the cutting edge of conservation biology, and specialising in scientific issues relevant to preserving animal species and their habitats.
As the scientific research division of the Zoological Society of London (ZSL), we undertake fundamental and applied research in five thematic areas:-
- Behavioural & Population Ecology
- Biodiversity & Macroecology
- Evolution & Molecular Ecology
- People, Wildlife & Ecosystems
- Wildlife Epidemiology
We also provide educational training through MSc and PhD programmes.
We are funded by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE), the same body that supports universities. Additional funding for specific projects comes from the UK research councils (e.g. NERC, BBSRC etc) and various other academic, corporate, governmental and charitable organizations (both within the UK and overseas).
From August 2011, the Institute has been affiliated with University College London (UCL), specifically with the UCL Research Department of Genetics, Evolution and Environment . Previous affiliations have been with the University of Cambridge (2000-2011) and the University of London (1988-2000).
In the 2001-2007 UK Research Assessment Exercise, science at the Institute was graded as 10% at 4*, 40% at 3*, 45% at 2*, and 5% at 1*, where 4* = world leading 3* = internationally excellent, 2* = international standard 1* = national standard.
