Field Biologist, Slender Loris Project – Sri Lanka

£18,000 – £19,000

The Zoological Society of London (ZSL) is seeking a Field Biologist to co-ordinate the fieldwork aspect of a new conservation programme in Sri Lanka’s biodiversity-rich Wet Zone. The programme will focus on the endemic red slender loris (Loris tardigradus), a nocturnal primate classified as Endangered on the 2007 IUCN Red List. The slender loris has been identified as a high priority for conservation attention in ZSL’s EDGE of Existence programme, and funding has recently been secured to establish an 18 month project to collect data crucial to the development of a conservation action plan for the species. Subsequent funding for implementing the recommended actions will be dependent on the success of this initial phase.

The Field Biologist will play an important role in establishing a strong field research programme in collaboration with local partners in Sri Lanka. Key responsibilities include training field assistants in standardised survey techniques, co-ordinating field researchers, data analysis and the production of technical reports, assisting with the organisation of the Action Planning workshop and creation of Conservation Action Plan, and providing general support to the Project Manager.

Candidates should have at least an MSc-level qualification in biological/conservation sciences with a strong research background and at least 12 months experience in carrying out wildlife surveys in tropical forest habitats. They should be physically fit, able to work independently in demanding field conditions, and have an aptitude both for managing field teams and for fostering relationships with institutional partners. Experience of working in Sri Lanka plus a working knowledge of GIS and tropical forest ecology would also be advantageous.

The post-holder will have a fixed term ZSL contract for 12 months, renewable until at least September 2009, and be based primarily in Sri Lanka. Return flights from Europe to Sri Lanka, visa and insurance under ZSL’s group travel insurance policy will be provided. The post is available immediately.

Further details of the project can be obtained on the Slender Loris Conservation page of the EDGE of Existence website (http://www.edgeofexistence.org/conservation/slender_loris.php) and further details on the post, if required, from Carly Waterman (carly.waterman@zsl.org).

Applicants should send their CV and a covering letter, detailing relevant experience and skills and including a possible start date, by email to hr@zsl.org.

Closing Date: Friday 30th May 2008. We hope to hold interviews the following week.
