Secondary schools programme
We have a fun and educational secondary programme at ZSL Whipsnade Zoo.
All activities are for single classes only. Sessions last 40 minutes.
Feeding in the savannah KS 3/4
Discover how different animals in the savannah ecosystem of Africa are adapted to their diet and their environment and how this helps them to survive. This session includes a visit to watch the giraffe feeding.
Extreme adaptations KS 3/4
Investigate a variety of behavioural and physical adaptations and discover how some animals can survive - and even thrive - in extreme environments.
Rhino Rangers KS 3/4
Find out how Kenyan rangers, in association with ZSL, track and identify black rhinos as part of conservation measures to save this critically endangered species, by doing it yourself!
Putting animals into groups KS 3/4
Choose either a classroom activity which uses a wide variety of biofacts to explore the main characteristics of the five vertebrate groups, OR a trail in the Discovery Centre observing live animals and recording findings.
Discovery - hands on KS 3/4
Using an array of biofacts, students are invited to improve their investigation skills and engage in personal enquiry. A useful session for all students, particularly for kinaesthetic learners.
Enclosure design KS 3/4 New
Using examples from ZSL Whipsnade Zoo, we explore enclosure design and enrichment, taking into consideration the needs of the animals, their keepers and the visitors. This is followed by a practical investigation in the lemur enclosure.
If you book this session you will also be able to enter our Design an enclosure competition.
Animal behaviour and training KS 3/4 New
Discover the science behind animal training - how we train animals at the Zoo and the importance of training for the animal’s welfare. This introduction is followed by a visit to observe the results of training in the sealion demonstration. (NB. This session is only offered between April and October.)

Role of a modern zoo KS 3/4/5
Using current case studies from ZSL, this session helps students to understand the role of a good zoo in breeding, conservation, research and education.
Climate change action KS 3/4/5 New
How far does climate change affect animals? We look at the effect of global warming on specific species and discuss how we, as individuals can reduce our impact on the environment.
I am talking to you! KS 4/5 New
Whether it is the need to establish a territory, the fear of approaching danger, or the need to attract a mate, animals communicate in a variety of ways. We explore different methods of communication and conclude with some observation at the chimp enclosure.
Self-guided trails
Adaptations Trail
This trail focuses on cold, hot and aquatic environments
Amazing Animals
A fun trail that looks in detail at the animals in the Discovery Centre. Good for developing observation skills and extending general knowledge.
