Thinking about Solutions

We help reduce greenhouse gas emissions by implementing several projects in Africa and Asia aimed at decreasing forest loss. Deforestation and degradation of forests contribute around 15% of anthropogenic carbon dioxide emissions. Therefore, improving forest management could help mitigate anthropogenically-driven climate change.

Climate change is then expected to cause spatio-temporal shifts in environmental conditions. Because some species will not be able to track their optimal habitat conditions, they could face a possible increase in their extinction risk. Assisted colonization, a form of translocation, has been proposed as a tool to help reduce this risk. ZSL is currently exploring ways to improve the efficiency of such strategies.

translocation

There are a couple of ways one can think about solutions to climate change: (1) one can focus on approaches to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, (2) one can focus on means to adapt to future climatic conditions. At ZSL, we do both.
