Public Marine Mammal Survey
Marine mammals are known to regularly visit the Thames estuary but, until now, sightings have not been formally recorded. ZSL is asking for your help to suvey these animals by letting us know about any encounters you may have had with seals, dolphins or porpoises on the Thames. Seal Tagging
The UK harbour seal population is thought to halved in the last decade but nobody really knows why. The Thames is currently home to a colony of harbour seals however very little is known about their population or ecology. ZSL are aiming to solve some the mysteries surrounding the seals and tagged ten individuals in summer 2011.

Studying strandings
The ZSL runs the collaborative UK Cetacean Strandings Investigation Programme (CSIP) that investigates stranded whales, dolphins and porpoises across the UK. The information gained provides valuable insights into the threats to and health of cetacean populations.
