What to bring

Here are our recommendations on what to bring on your visit to Mikongo

Visitors should wear clothes of neutral colours (dark green, brown, dark grey) and avoid white/black/dark blue clothes. You will need a daypack, waterbottle (although plastic disposable ones can be purchased in-country), long trousers, shirts or tee-shirts with long sleeves, good walking shoes (preferably waterproofed), sandals or flip flops to give your feet a break, a hat, binoculars, camera, suncream, sunglasses, a waterproof or poncho, mosquito repellent (preferably including DEET) and malaria prophylaxis. Jackets are recommended for evenings during the dry season (July-September). Sockets fit European-style plugs so you may need an adapter.

If you are not sure if you are up to date on all necessary vaccinations you should visit a doctor or travel clinic at least six weeks in advance of travelling, as many tropical diseases are endemic. You may be required to show your yellow fever certificate at the airport so remember to bring it along as well.

The CFA (Central African Franc) is pegged to the Euro so bring Euros in cash to exchange at a bank or currency exchange in Libreville. There are also now some ATMs in Libreville where you can withdraw cash using a Visa card. Visa is not widely accepted for payment in Gabon and you will need cash with you in Lopé and Mikongo (CFA is best although we take Euros at Mikongo).
