Chagos Environment Family Days
In 2012 and 2013, between ZSL London Zoo, Tulley’s Farm, Manchester Museum and Blackpool Zoo, ZSL have now hosted over 900 of the Chagossian community of Crawley and Manchester at Chagos Environment Family Days.
Highly biodiverse reefs were created from plastic pollution in Ocean Rooms and Reef Environments, people of all ages sampled what it is like to be a real underwater conservationist in Reef Check activities, and the science of the oceans has been explored in the Marine Labs.
Extra fun has been introduced over the days by London School of Diving who suited up visitors with full SCUBA kit, Sea Urchins Magazine with colouring activities, and Coral Cay Conservation showing the exciting expeditions they run for young people.
Discussion sessions have allowed conservation experts and recent visitors to the Chagos archipelago to answer questions about its environment, the Marine Protected Area (MPA) and what ZSL and its partners hope for protection of Chagos in the future. Graduates of our training course have been able to share their experiences, both in the UK and Chagos.
ZSL would like to say huge thank you to everyone who has been involved in making these days special, most importantly the Chagossian community for their smiles and enthusiasm. We look forward to next year! Check out some highlights below and please visit our project page or get in touch:
