Stephen had pledged his support to 21st Century Tiger, established as a joint venture between ZSL and Global Tiger Patrol. 21st Century Tiger funds wild tiger conservation projects throughout Asia.

Sophie Darlington, of 21st Century Tiger, said: “We were shocked and saddened to hear the news that Stephen Gately had passed away.

"He was a charming, caring person who shared our passion for wild tiger conservation, and we were looking forward to working with him in the future.

"Our thoughts are with his partner, family and friends at this time”.

Stephen visited the tigers at ZSL London Zoo in April, and said on the day: "As a big animal lover I am really pleased to be able to help raise awareness of the terrible plight of tigers facing extinction by promoting 21st Century Tiger."

21st Century Tiger supports carefully chosen conservation projects that are dedicated to making a long term difference to the future of wild tigers.

These range from anti-poaching, education and wildlife-trading projects in Sumatra and Russia to research projects in India.
