The GLOBE Action Plan for Coral Reefs
In March 2010, ZSL began work on the GLOBE Action Plan for Coral Reefs to address the current coral reef crisis. This comprehensive, global action plan for GLOBE legislators and national governments will address the direct human impacts on coral reefs in order to increase their resilience to the effects of climate change.
Coral reefs are one of the world’s most threatened ecosystems. A combination of human pressures, global climate change and ocean acidification threaten to destroy them completely in the next 50 years unless substantial action is taken now.
In addition to reducing atmospheric CO2 concentrations to a safe level, the best strategy to give coral reefs any hope of survival is to reduce all other direct human impacts on them and build up capacity for their effective management. A key aim of the Action Plan is to promote win-win policies that increase both the ecological resilience of coral reefs and the social resilience of the people that depend on them.
GLOBE International’s coral reef policy proposals will provide a framework for smart investment in coral reefs. By acting now to reduce our impacts and dependence on coral reef ecosystems we can provide a buffer to the long-term effects of climate change, reduce adaptation costs and contribute to achieving poverty reduction and sustainable development goals.
The GLOBE Action Plan for Coral Reefs will be launched at a GLOBE ICLUCE meeting at the Convention on Biological Diversity 10th Conference of the Parties (CBD COP10) in Nagoya, Japan on 24th October 2010. Following legislators’ endorsement of the policy proposals, GLOBE will work with national parliaments to implement policies relevant to each country with the aim of generating a step-change in the legislative approach to coral reef conservation and management.
