ZSL provides science-based information on the status and trends of the world’s species and ecosystems. We use this information to inform society and policy makers of the magnitude of the current environmental crises and to enable effective priorities to be set and solutions identified.
GLOBE International
Ecosystem degradation is one of the greatest challenges we face, putting people and wildlife at risk. Therefore, it is more important than ever for scientists to engage effectively with policymakers.
ZSL act as scientific advisors to GLOBE International, a forum of senior cross-party parliamentarians from G8+5 countries, on terrestrial and marine issues. Find out more about the work of GLOBE
National Red Lists
International targets set for reducing biodiversity loss may still be achieved with the help of a new online conservation tool.
The new initiative led by ZSL brings together information on the world’s threatened species and demonstrates that we know the least about the status of animals and plants in areas where diversity is greatest. Find out more on the National Red List website
UN Conferences on Sustainable Development: Rio+20
ZSL took part in Rio +20, the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development. A major theme of the conference was the green economy - the intersection between the environment and economy, and how this can be developed to safeguard a sustainable future.
UN Convention on Biodiversity
The UN Convention on Biological Diversity
(CBD) is an international agreement aiming to conserve global biological diversity through sustainable and equitable use of natural genetic resources.
ZSL attended the 2010 CBD conference in Nagoya, Japan, to communicate the current state of biodiversity and put forward practical solutions for communities, business and government to address biodiversity loss. We launched four key reports directly related to the CBD aims of post-2010 goals and mainstreaming biodiversity across sectors. Find out more about ZSL at Nagoya
Marine reserves Coalition
In 2011, ZSL and partners formed the Marine Reserves Coalition to advance the creation of fully protected marine reserves, closed to all potentially damaging activities.
There are far fewer protected areas in the sea than on land, despite the inclusion of marine protection in many international policy targets. We hope to change that, starting with calling on the UK Government to commit to establishing representative networks of marine reserves in UK territories.
