ZSL scoops best website award in Visit London Awards 2005
Thursday 1 December 2005
The Zoological Society of London (ZSL) received the award for Best Website for www.zsl.org at the 2005 Visit London Awards, held at Old Billingsgate Market to celebrate London’s top tourism businesses.
Presented by GMTV presenter, Kate Garraway, and sponsored by Web Diversity, the award recognises the achievement of the multi-functional website, which successfully targets ZSL’s broad and unique audience, from zoological scientists through to young children.
As well as sections on ZSL’s two living collections, Whipsnade Wild Animal Park and London Zoo, the website has areas dedicated to field conservation, Biota! (ZSL’s planned conservation centre in the docklands), an insight into discovery and learning and the scientific work of the Institute of Zoology. The website has raised the profile of the charity, increasing visitors to the two animal collections, raising awareness of ZSL’s work and providing increased revenue for the charity.
The website was project managed in house and designed and built by agency, The Other Media. Since its launch in April 2005, the site has attracted just over 6.5 million page impressions, and has so far fulfilled its aim of greatly increasing the profile of ZSL as the brand behind its groundbreaking conservation and science work.
Sian Pickles, ZSL’s web editor commented:
“Winning the ‘best London website’ award is a great opportunity to recognise all the hard work that has been dedicated to the redesign and rebuild of www.zsl.org. Not only does the new site promote the visitor attraction element of the society, but more importantly it highlights the diverse spectrum of work that is undertaken by ZSL in international conservation and research and science.”
