Ocean Degradation

Ocean Degradation © Martin Rowson

The oceans cover 71% of the world’s surface area. About 60% of the oceans are outside the economic exclusion zone (EEZ) of any nation. Ocean biodiversity is in general poorly managed and this is particularly the case outside the EEZ. More than 80% of the world’s fish stocks are currently fully or over-harvested and most of the world’s major fish stocks are set to crash by 2050. Improved governance of ocean resources is desperately needed if the next generation is to have viable fisheries. The consumer also has a role to play as pressure for sustainably sourced fish could have a major impact on fisheries management.

A few things you can do:Innovations

□ Only eat sustainably sourced (certified) fish and shellfish
□ Support the implementation of marine protected areas
□ Speak out against bottom trawling
□ Consider your seafood consumption on biodiversity
□ Stop using plastic bags
□ Use biodegradable cleaning products
