Much scientific work undertaken by the Institute of Zoology focuses on conservation, while ZSL London Zoo and ZSL Whipsnade Zoo maintain captive stocks of endangered species and provide animal management and wildlife veterinary skills.

ZSL's Conservation Programmes focus on providing direct conservation successes. The distinct features of ZSL's conservation work are that we combine pure and applied research; we study genes, manage species and survey ecosystems, and combine applied and pure research.

A distinctive theme of ZSL's conservation work is the protection and management of habitats and wild animals in the context of local communities.

ZSL has to raise funds for its conservation work from a wide variety of sources, including government, both UK and abroad, charities, business, and private individuals. We also work in partnership with other conservation groups and agencies, and have developed close ties with the Wildlife Conservation Society to promote best practice in all aspects of animal conservation.

ZSL's Conservation Programmes are supported by a core team of seven staff based at Regent's Park, with field staff working on projects in the Middle East, throughout Africa, and south and south-east Asia.

Building on its historic strengths, and informed by global conservation priorities, ZSL has chosen to focus its conservation work around six distinct programmes:

A variety of projects are underway within each of the six programme areas at any one time.
