The London Eel Action Plan (LEAP)
London's rivers face multiple pressures. They have been heavily modified for land drainage and flood risk management. A large amount of their water is abstracted and what is left is often subject to diffuse and point source pollution.
As a result many provide degraded habitats for fisheries. In particular there are problems related to the migration of fish, loss of spawning sites and fry retention.
The London Eel Action Plan (LEAP), under the guidance of the Environment Agency's Thames catchment fisheries team, uses the European eel as a flagship species to improve rivers for eels and consequently other fish and wildlife. The aims of the LEAP are in line with the wider aims of the Thames River Basin Management Plan under the Water Framework Directive. LEAP projects offer an opportunity to get your wellies on and help restore
ZSL is looking to form new partnerships with individuals and organisations who share our goals for London's Rivers.
