Camera trapping in Berbak National Park
The ZSL field team recently travelled into Berbak National Park to set up a series of camera traps. ZSL manages a project called the Berbak Carbon Initiative that aims to conserve the Berbak forest ecosystem. Berbak is home to many species of flora and fauna, including the critically endangered Sumatran Tiger, and ZSL intends to assist forest managers to generate carbon credits- primarily by reducing illegal and legal deforestation- which can then be sold to generate revenue. Due to the vast amount of carbon reserves in Berbak, we estimate that enough revenue can be generated to make the forests more valuable standing up rather than cut down. As part of this project, we are also collecting large amounts of baseline ecological data, so that we can establish how the wildlife in the park responds to the impact of reduced carbon emissions. Camera traps are excellent ways of getting a better look at some of the more cryptic species that live in the park.
