Mikongo Activities

The centre offers guests a range of forest-based and cultural activities.

Mikongo Village Dancing
Guided walks in the forest, using an extensive network of paths, are organised from the camp every day. Walks are tailored in length and difficulty to suit guests’ abilities and desires and are made with two staff per group. Groups are accompanied by at least one ecoguide (according to the size of the group) and probably one of our Baka pygmy trackers.

During these walks guests can experience undisturbed forests where monkeys and elephants may be found as well as closed forest where gorillas may be encountered. The walks also take in river banks, small savannah patches within the forest, Picathartes rocks (ideal for birders!), and spectacular views from surrounding hills that overlook the forest.

Visitors also have the opportunity to swim in a natural pool in a river a ten minute walk from camp.

'Gorilla evenings' can also be arranged upon request. These provide guests with the opportunity to learn in more detail about the research and habituation work with gorillas that goes on at Mikongo Conservation Centre. The evening includes documentaries about gorillas and the national parks of Gabon.

ZSL also helps to promote ecotourism activities in local villages by offering logistical support to community associations in Lopé National Park. Upon request, natural or cultural community-based activities including traditional dances and dinners, demonstrations of traditional fishing in pirogues and visits to bat caves can be organised. Prices vary according to the activity and fees go directly to the community involved.
