The project

Biota! represents the creation of a new class of visitor experience, not previously seen in the UK. Biota! will present the global diversity of aquatic life through four strongly contrasting biomes. Each biome will represent a complete ecosystem, with trees and other plants, fish, invertebrates, reptiles, amphibians, mammals and birds, offering an exciting and inspirational experience

Where possible, the habitats created will be exact replicas of specific sites. Detailed surveys conducted in the field will enable the closest possible similarity to the wild. The experience will transport visitors on a round-theworld tour of streams, lakes, rivers, coral reefs and oceans.

Innovative design and interpretation will enable visitors to experience some of the world’s most stunning and fascinating aquatic habitats, in the centre of London. Attractive exhibits will be underpinned by conservation and research, helping us to understand more about the aquatic world and how we can conserve it.

As a new architectural landmark for London within a major regeneration project, Biota! will also contribute to the economic regeneration of the Royal Docks and the wider Thames Gateway.

Biota! will be a subsidiary charity of the Zoological Society of London (ZSL) and will benefit from ZSL’s expertise in running visitor attractions, managing animal collections, undertaking scientific research and running conservation projects in the field.

It is our vision that this project will go beyond an exciting visitor attraction. Through active research, conservation and education, we believe that Biota! will make a difference to our understanding of the aquatic world, and to our ability to make the right decisions about the precious wildlife and natural resources with which we share our planet.
