We are celebrating the birth of a new cria, baby llama, at ZSL London Zoo during May 2014. The first llama to be born at the Zoo for more than 10 years, the male youngster, coloured chocolate brown, has been named Mocha by his zookeepers.
This lovely illustration of llamas including a cria (a baby llama), was published in Gleanings from the Menagerie and aviary at Knowsley Hall : hoofed quadrupeds in 1850.
This volume was commissioned by and privately published for Edward Smith Stanley, 13th Earl of Derby (1775-1851). Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins (1807-1889) illustrated the hoofed mammals in the Earl of Derby's menagerie at Knowsley Hall. Edward Stanley was President of the Zoological Society from 1831 until his death in 1851.
We have featured illustrations from the other volume of the Gleanings from the Menagerie and aviary at Knowsley Hall in previous artefacts as part of our Edward Lear celebrations.
