Artefact of the month February 2013 - National Libraries Day
National Libraries Day is on Saturday 9 February so to celebrate we are featuring ZSL's Library as this month's artefact!
Fellows and Members of ZSL are welcome to visit the Library but please remember to bring your membership card. Fellows may also borrow books from the ZSL Library.
Members of the public are welcome to visit and use ZSL Library but both photographic ID and proof of address will be required on your first visit.
Appointments are not normally necessary but they are needed if you wish to view any of our 'special collections’ i.e. ZSL's Archives, historic books, artworks, 'zoophemera', historic photographs.
Please explore the other Library pages on this website for further details about access and our holdings.
Use our online catalogue to find more detailed information about specific items in our holdings. It also contains links to relevant online resources:
Welcome to ZSL Library, this is our entrance lobby, from here you go up a flight of stairs to ...
the Library Reading Room where as many books as possible are kept for easy access
Upstairs again to the Library's Gallery where you can browse recent magazines and journal issues
A selection of small sculptures and other art works are displayed in the Library Reading Room, this is a model of Obaysch the first hippopotamus at ZSL London Zoo
There is usually an interesting display in the Library's Reading Room. This was a display during 2012 to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. It features some items from ZSL's Archives, historic photographic collection and ephemera. Queen Elizabeth II is ZSL's Patron.
This is an early view of the Reading Room which also acted as ZSL's meeting room. It was refurbished in the 1960s
New modern rolling shelves were installed in the `stacks' during the 1960s refurbishment. These are still in use for storing journals.
