Penguins on snow, ZSL London Zoo, 1924
This delightful, seasonal photograph of black footed (Jackass) penguins in the snow dates from 1924, before the time of the famous Lubetkin Penguin Pool. Two of the penguins are peeping out from kennel-like nest-boxes as though they are not quite sure about the weather.
They were photographed by Frederick William Bond (1887-1942) who joined ZSL’s Accounts Department in 1903. He served in the Army from 1917 to 1919; after he was demobilised he was appointed Accountant. He later became ZSL’s Assistant Treasurer.
Bond took the opportunity to photograph a vast number of animals while he had privileged access to them at ZSL London Zoo and ZSL Whipsnade Zoo. He had a unique opportunity to photograph the development of Whipsnade before and after its opening.
On his death his photographic collection was presented to ZSL in the form of contact prints and glass negatives. These are currently being moved into conservation quality storage by a team of volunteers.
