This month marks 100 years since the Offices and Library of ZSL moved from Hanover Square in central London, to newly built premises in Regent's Park, next to London Zoo.

As a previous Librarian of ZSL wrote: "The move to Regent's Park [from Hanover Square] was brought about not so much by the lack of accommodation as the fact that the weight of the books [in the Library] was proving a danger to the building, and even more by the great advantages to be gained from bringing the centre of administration of the menagerie into the gardens. In the early days, Regent's Park was remote from the centre of London, and at night particularly access was difficult and even dangerous. By 1910 all this had changed and there was no reason why evening meetings should not be held there." (R Fish, in the Symposia of ZSL, 40, 1976, p246).

Despite a last-minute challenge from a group of Fellows who opposed the move, it went ahead and the Offices and Library were moved to a new building next to London Zoo, where it remains today.

The Library was refitted in 1964, when the Meeting Room was moved into a new building next door. The old Meeting Room shown in these pictures from 1910 was divided into two floors and utilised by the Library. Why not visit the Library and see how it has changed?
